Spotlight Session: Fvneral
Fvneral
Described by Ash McGregor as a “queer supergroup”, FVNERAL is a collaboration between trans non-binary songwriter/producer Tay Blunt - whose discography (Stand Atlantic, Birds of Tokyo) has clocked more than 15 million streams - alongside Madeleine Powers (aka RAGEFLOWER) and Ben Siva (aka jnr.), whose respective solo projects have garnered significant critical acclaim in their own right.
Says Tay on the single and the EP; "Our forthcoming EP, ‘chosen family’, is a collection of songs that explore what it means to navigate the world as a trans and queer person today. ‘landline’ chronicles the inner turmoil that I experienced in wrestling with the idea of coming out as a trans non-binary person and what the consequences of doing so might be; it also describes the brief moments of optimism where I imagined what life could be like if I ever found the courage to come out.“

Why Chosen Family Matters: Community, Identity & Music
Featuring FVNERAL’s Tay Blunt on the LOTL Lounge
For many people, “family” evokes blood ties and childhood homes. But within queer communities, family often looks different - built through friendship, solidarity, and the people who show up when it matters most. This idea sits at the heart of FVNERAL’s new EP Chosen Family, and during our recent LOTL Lounge interview, songwriter and producer Tay Blunt shared how deeply personal that concept has become.
Finding Family When You Need It Most
Tay reflected on how chosen family first appeared in their life as something distant - a hopeful idea rather than a lived reality.
“As a younger person, the concept of chosen family felt so aspirational and far off,” Tay said. “But about a year and a half ago, while writing these songs and reading queer literature, I realised I had found my people.”
For many queer folks, chosen family emerges when traditional support systems fall short. It’s a conscious act of gathering the people who see you, support you, and help you grow - and Tay’s journey mirrors that experience for countless listeners.
Music as a Mirror
FVNERAL’s EP explores the emotional terrain of identity, community, and vulnerability. Tracks like “Hate U” dive into darker themes, confronting manipulation and power imbalance with honesty and clarity.
“It’s recognising you might be in a situation that’s manipulative,” Tay explained. “And trying to reflect on how that happened and how complex and messy that can be.”
By naming these experiences, Tay creates space for listeners to feel understood — and to recognise their own stories within the music.
Visibility That Inspires
Representation is central to FVNERAL’s work. Seeing queer and trans artists on stage isn’t just affirming; it’s transformative.
“I hope people get a sense of community around them,” Tay said. “And maybe seeing someone like them on stage makes them think they could go start a band.”
Visibility becomes possibility. It becomes permission. And it becomes a reminder that queer creativity is not only valid — it’s vital.
Music That Builds Community
Above all, Tay sees Chosen Family as an invitation. A gesture. A hand extended.
“These songs are a gesture of us showing we can be that community for people,” Tay shared.
Music becomes a bridge — connecting individual stories to collective strength. It’s a reminder that none of us have to navigate identity or hardship alone.
FVNERAL’s Chosen Family is more than an EP. It’s a celebration of queer resilience, a tribute to the people who lift us up, and a powerful reminder that family is something we build together.
