Eligibility & Nomination Guide for the 2027 Awardsnominations guidelines

Let's lift up the drag king community together!

The inaugural Australian Drag King Awards celebrate the performers, artists, venues, events and community leaders who make Australian drag king culture vibrant, diverse and visible.

Whether you're a performer, audience member, event organiser, venue, artist or community supporter, you can help make a difference.

Make a Difference - Nominate a Drag King!

You can make a difference by nominating a drag king, venue, event, or community member who deserves recognition. Your nomination helps celebrate the talent, creativity and contributions that make Australian drag king culture vibrant, diverse and visible.

You don't need to be an expert in drag or know someone's entire career to nominate them. If you believe their work deserves recognition, help tell their story. You can even self-nominate and share the achievements you are proud of.

Self-Nomination Tips

A strong self-nomination explains what you have done, why it matters and how your achievements meet the award criteria.

Include your public performance name, the award category and a brief explanation of why you deserve recognition. Where possible, share examples of performances, creative work, events or community contributions during the eligibility period, along with links, dates or other supporting

information.

You don't need to write a formal essay. Clear, specific examples are more valuable than general statements of popularity. Make sure any personal information, photographs or supporting materials you submit can appropriately be shared with the awards team.

Celebrating All Forms of Drag King Artistry

The Australian Drag King Community Awards celebrate the full diversity of drag king artistry in Australia.

All styles and expressions of drag king performance are welcome across the award categories, including comedy, character, cabaret, theatre, dance, live music, glamour, camp, alternative drag, political and satirical performance, storytelling, experimental and multidisciplinary work, and other forms of king artistry.

Drag king artistry may include live performance, character creation, makeup, costume, movement, music, visual storytelling, community building and cultural expression. Artists may work across multiple styles or specialise in a particular form.

Nominees will be assessed against the published criteria for the category in which they are nominated, taking into account the style, intention and context of their work. Judges will consider artistic quality, creativity, execution and impact rather than conformity to a particular performance style, body type, gender expression, aesthetic or idea of masculinity.

No single style of drag king artistry is considered more valid or valuable than another. The awards aim to recognise excellence across the breadth of Australian drag king culture, including established, emerging, experimental and community-led practices.
