Let There Be Docs!

Back when I was a 19‑year‑old Christian working $5 an hour at my babysitting job, I hid LOTL under piles of clothing in my bedroom. At that stage, I had no hope of ever finding a girlfriend or being able to afford a pair of Docs.

Luckily, fortunes changed. This is my fifth pair, given to me by Lib around the time of our 20th anniversary.

I love art for its healing power, which can sometimes be amplified by the artwork’s title.

Let There Be Docs! references Genesis 1:3: “And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.” The title helps me reconcile two disparate parts of myself: the awkward Christian teen, and the Doc‑wearing lesbian she would become.

These days, my family accepts me as I am.

I’ve ditched certain Christian friends as I could no longer tolerate their beliefs in conversion therapy, and I detested being the subject of their prayers.

If there’s a point to life at all, it’s to live truthfully.

I no longer wear Docs because I have arthritis in my toes. I’ve had to switch to runners, but I’ll never throw these boots away—they’re part of who I am.

If this picture holds a simple message, maybe it’s this: Docs don’t judge and neither should we. For churchgoers tempted to adopt prejudicial attitudes, healing is possible, and it’s available right here. If you’re lost, if you’re unhappy, if your self‑righteousness is a cover for things in your life you cannot bear to face, these Docs will gently guide you back—into the light of God’s rainbow—if you let them.
