LGBTQIA+ addiction services will receive a boost in the ACT by developing tailored programs developed by SMART Recovery, Australia’s national addiction support organisation.

SMART Recovery Australia will develop and implement tailored addiction programs to address the specific needs of the LGBTQIA+ community, providing a safe and inclusive space for individuals to seek support on their recovery journey.

Supported by the ACT Government through a $40,000 ACT Health Promotion grant, the funding will help SMART Recovery Australia expand its vital work in providing services to the LGBTQIA+ community in the region.

Research shows that LGBTIQA+ people have consistently higher levels of substance use than the general population and often face unique challenges and barriers to addiction recovery, including stigma, discrimination, and a lack of targeted recovery services.

SMART Recovery Australia CEO April Long said, “LGBTIQA+ people face unique challenges when it comes to addiction, which requires unique approaches to support them out of it. We are delighted to receive this grant from the ACT Government, which will enable us to expand our services and reach more LGBTQIA+ individuals in the ACT who are struggling with addiction. This funding will allow us to provide evidence-based treatment early and in an inclusive and identity-affirming environment where LGBTIQA+ individuals can feel comfortable and empowered to seek the help they need.” said April.

The grant will also support the launch of a dedicated LGBTQIA+ recovery training program designed to train more facilitators in supporting the unique needs of the LGBTQIA+ community.

SMART Recovery Australia is committed to ensuring that all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, have access to the support they need to overcome addictive behaviours. With online and in-person meetings supporting thousands of Australians weekly, SMART Recovery Australia empowers people experiencing addiction with evidence-based strategies and support on their path to recovery.
