THE COMING BACK OUT BALL MOVIE | Trailer
Closing Night Gala | D Sue Thomson | Australia, 2018
In the middle of Australia’s bitterly divisive marriage equality vote, Melbourne hosted a gala event to honour and celebrate its LGBTI elders. These are their stories.
LGBTI seniors have been pioneers in many ways, beginning the fight for equality in an era when being queer could land you in jail, lose you your job or worse. But as they have aged, some started going back into the closet in nursing homes or when accessing aged-care services, owing to feeling unsafe in these environments.
The Coming Back Out Ball was a glittering red-carpet evening held in October 2017 to celebrate these pioneers and their achievements, and to combat invisibility for LGBTI seniors. Hosted by cabaret legend Robyn Archer and with a guest list including Carlotta, Deborah Cheetham, Gerry Connolly (as the Queen) and a who’s who of Melbourne’s elder LGBTI community, it was a night to remember!
Director Sue Thomson documents the process as All The Queen’s Men puts the event together and – most importantly – captures the stories of key elders being honoured at the Ball. The resulting film, supported by the MIFF Premiere Fund, is a life-affirming love letter to senior members of the ‘alphabet’ community, and to Melbourne, with an important message about the necessity of pride, acceptance, equality and dignity at all stages of life – and a whole lot of dancing!

LEFT ON PEARL Trailer
This award-winning 55-minute documentary chronicles a successful 1971 building occupation by members of the Women's Liberation Movement in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Hundreds of Boston-area women took over a Harvard University-owned building on International Women’s Day, demanding a women's center and affordable housing for the low-income community where the building stood. The takeover and its aftermath led to the establishment of the oldest continuously operating Women's Center in the United States. LEFT ON PEARL explores the intersection of the women’s liberation movement with the anti-war, gay rights, tenants' rights, and Black power movements. It depicts the women's movement of the late sixties and early seventies as an inextricable part of the mass movement for social and political change.
Over the past two years, LEFT ON PEARL has appeared in more than fifty film festivals across the United States and internationally, including screenings in South Korea, Germany, South Africa, Croatia, Latvia, Kosovo, and the Netherlands. The Origins Of Homophobia, and The World According To Homophobes
Pop Trigger interviews filmmaker and activist Emmanuelle Schick Garcia on her film "The World According To Homophobes".
"The World According to Homophobes aims to uncover the origin of people’s homophobia. With the insight of Dr. Gilligan, a leading psychiatrist and former director of mental health for the Massachusetts prison system, and other leading sociologists and psychologists, we will delve into the minds of homophobes to understand what drives their behaviour.
To accomplish this, the director, Emmanuelle Schick Garcia, has interviewed paramilitaries and violent felons, politicians, religious leaders and school directors. Through candid conversations, these individuals have discussed their sex education, feelings towards homosexuals and what arguments they use to defend their homophobia.
By deconstructing the superstitions and feelings of homophobes, especially the poorly studied emotion of shame, the film hopes to help homophobes self-reflect and reconcile their feelings towards homosexuality."

Southwest of Salem - Official Trailer
SOUTHWEST OF SALEM excavates the nightmarish persecution of Elizabeth Ramirez, Cassandra Rivera, Kristie Mayhugh, and Anna Vasquez — four Latina lesbians wrongfully convicted of allegedly gang raping two little girls. This bizarre case is the first to be adjudicated under momentous new legislation: for the first time in U.S. history, wrongfully convicted innocents can challenge convictions based on debunked scientific evidence. The film also unravels the sinister interplay of mythology, homophobia, and prosecutorial fervor which led to this modern day witch hunt. -

against a trans narrative, 2008 (Trailer)
Jules Rosskam's against a trans narrative is a provocative and personal experimental documentary investigating dominant constructions of trans-masculine identity, gender, and the nature of community.
By sensitively framing the film through his own personal journey within the trans-masculine community, Rosskam creates an electric and original investigation into gender politics and social self-identity.
Blending fiction, nonfiction, and experimental film genres, against a trans narrative employs a genre-busting combination of intimate diary footage, stylized dramatic scenes, spoken word performance, faux audition tapes, and roundtable interview footage to explore and initiate a dialogue between feminists, queers, and transfolk about the way we construct personal and historical narratives. Careful attention is paid to the ways generation, race, class, and culture impact our understandings of gender. -
Broken Pride
Domestic and family violence (DFV) in lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and Queer (LGBTQI) relationships is as common as it is in non-LGBTQI relationships, with about 3 in 5 having experienced some form of DFV.
Studies indicate that violence within LGBTQI relationships is similar to non-LGBTQI relationships in terms of prevalence, severity and the effects of relationship abuse. However, homophobia, transphobia, heterosexism and other gender-based discrimination often create additional and specific difficulties for LGBTQI people seeking service provision and support.
Violence in LGBTQI relationships have the same elements as all violent relationships, but there are some unique differences for LGBTQI people. How is this different and how does it affect a LGBTQI victim (or perpetrator) of DFV? -
