Councillor Kerryn Phelps moved a unanimous motion to congratulate the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras 2018 staff and volunteers.
Councillor Phelps spoke about the “spectacular and successful” events held throughout February and March, with culminated “in the biggest parade to date.”
“Co-Chairs of Mardi Gras, Kate Wickett and Brandon Bear, CEO Terese Casu and the Board did an incredible job on this special 40th anniversary of the parade, capturing the spirit of resilience and joy of the LGBTQI community.”
Councillor Kerryn Phelps said, “With marriage equality so recently passed, 2018 was about celebration and remembrance. We have come so far, I was able to stand side-by-side with original 78ers and senior police officers, a remarkable symbol of rapprochement. It was also a privilege to celebrate the pride of such a diverse LBGTQI community.”
“I also loved the mix of Mardi Gras events leading up to the parade, which were informative, respectful and inclusive,” Councillor Phelps said, “And of course, the party was a great success.”
Councillor Phelps acknowledged the City of Sydney Council’s Mardi Gras float, saying “I might be a little biased, but I think the Council staff had the best choreography of the night!”
“It was fantastic to see the effort that Council staff put into preparing vibrant costumes and the commitment to a fabulous dance routine. I thanked them all for their efforts in supporting the LGBTQI community at Monday night’s Council meeting.”
“It means a lot to me to know that our workplace is so supportive of equality and that these values are on display at such a huge event.”
