Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras have recently announced the formation of the Mardi Gras Museum Committee, which will launch the initiative to bring a Mardi Gras museum to Sydney.

“We want a museum in Sydney celebrating the journey of Mardi Gras and the fight for equality within our community,” David Wilson, chair of the new committee, said in a statement.

It is thought that the new museum will highlight the cultural diversity of the community and celebrate the struggles of the LGBT equality movement.

Only two LGBTQI museums exist in the world currently – the Schwules Museum in Berlin and the LGBT Historical Society Museum in San Francisco.

Wilson hoped the Sydney museum “would be a fantastic opportunity to showcase Sydney’s history and diversity.”

The committee is currently searching for a possible location for the museum, scouting along Oxford Street and other sites. As next year is the 35th anniversary of the Sydney Mardi Gras, the committee intends to have a temporary museum by that time to gauge community support.
