The Healthy Communities Program of The Queensland AIDS Council is sponsoring an exciting event for those over the ’50s.

It is the first opportunity for older members of the diverse LGBTI communities on the Gold Coast to access a large range of information relevant to their stage in life and culture.  In addition, the expo is an ideal place for aged care organisations and community groups to start building relationships to better meet the special needs of older LGBTI people.

“For too long many older LGBTI people have not felt safe or comfortable using aged care and community services, and this free event will address some of the issues in a friendly atmosphere of celebration,”  said Michael Scott, Executive Director of Queensland AIDS Council.

The expo and gathering program is jammed packed with films, free workshops, entertainment and activities. The live entertainment will feature the band ” Diddly Squat” who were the Queensland finalists on ABC TV’s “Exhumed”.

The Amazing Ageing Race will encourage visitors to celebrate the age they are. There are clues with the stallholders and visitors who find the clues have a chance to win a fabulous weekend for 2 at the Kingfisher Bay Resort on Fraser Island, donated by the Resort.

As well as free health checks, visitors can enter the scrabble competition, watch Prejudice and Pride or do an Advanced Health Directive workshop with the Gold Coast’s own Professor Cartwright.

“Given the history of criminalisation and discrimination, it is so important for LGBTI people to have a clear Advanced Health Directive. This expo is a great opportunity for everyone to get started with Colleen’s expert guidance and help,” said Gai Lemon, Director of Healthy Communities Programs.

The internationally acclaimed film “Gen Silent”, will screen for the first time on the Gold Coast. This powerful documentary starts at 2 pm and will be followed by a forum and discussion with elders, young people, and service providers.

The expo and gathering will be at Southport Community Centre, Sunday, February 8th from 11 am – 4 pm with plenty of food and drink available at the venue during the day.
