RUDD’S DEFENCE OF MARRIAGE EQUALITY “A HISTORIC MOMENT”

Advocates have declared Kevin Rudd's defence of marriage equality a historic moment in the campaign for the reform and urged people of faith who support marriage equality to follow his example.

Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome said,

"It is unprecedented in Australian history for a Prime Minister to give such a strong defence of equality for gay people, and it was made all the more compelling because it was from a Christian perspective."

"Mr Rudd gave a moral and spiritual urgency to marriage equality that will resonate with many Australians, including many Australians Christians, and which marks a historic moment in the debate."

"I urge Australians of faith who support marriage equality to follow Mr Rudd's example and engage their co-religionists in a discussion about why marriage equality matters."

Last night on the ABC panel show, Q&A, Mr Rudd defended his decision to support marriage equality, saying it was made in "good, informed Christian conscience" based on the Biblical principle of "universal love, loving your fellow man".

He said "people don't choose their sexuality, they are born that way", and reminded his audience "the Bible also says that slavery is a natural condition".
