COMPLETING THE PAINTING

This multi-figure portrait began in September 2019, taking 2 months to complete. “The preliminary sketches from several sitting with each of the featured women were followed by several abstract colour sketches to capture an
alternative to the traditional rainbow that was still recognisable,” says Leutwyler.

Leutwyler used a balance between realism and abstraction to allow viewers to see themselves in the work, and cast their own interpretations. The women featured in the painting include DJ Janye, Writer, Actor and DJ Faustina Agolley, Olympic Athlete Michelle Heyman, Photographer Cole Rodriquez (who also happens to be the artist’s wife) and two of the artist’s close friends. The composition is a nod to the original L Word series opening scenes that were updated each season.
