Portraits from ‘Outing Disability’ Photograph Exhibition

In a timely reminder that inclusion is an ongoing community priority, Family Planning NSW is launching a new exhibition, ‘Outing Disability’, as an official event of the 2014 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

As we gear up for another action-packed Mardi Gras, it’s easy to forget what life is like for marginalised groups who struggle to participate in LGBTIQ community life.
In a timely reminder that inclusion is an ongoing community priority, Family Planning NSW is launching a new exhibition, Outing Disability, as an official event of the 2014 Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.
This photographic exhibition, shot by internationally acclaimed photographer Belinda Mason, celebrates diversity in the lives of LGBTIQ people living with disabilities.
Running from Thursday 6th February to Saturday 1st March, Outing Disability features intimate and captivating photographic portraits that tell the stories of unique identities and relationships.
According to Family Planning CEO Ann Brassil, the exhibition aims to bring attention to the great diversity of sex, sexuality and gender amongst an often invisible group of people.
“We have worked in partnership with all those whose stories are showcased in the exhibition to ensure their voices are heard, and their stories told – the exhibition has been created in a way that is accessible and engaging,” said Ann.
Senior Health Promotion Officer Rob Hardy adds, “We hope the exhibition will provide an opportunity for the broader community to consider how we see and embrace people with disabilities – to think about how we as individuals, and as a society, can work to be more inclusive.”
The event, being held with the support of the City of Sydney, will be launched on Thursday 6th, February by Sydney’s Deputy Lord Mayor and Councillor Robyn Kemmis. The launch will include personal stories from people captured in these stunning photographs, bringing personal experience and insight to this intimate series.
