Experience the energy of the one-woman show “Bitch Boxer”
Katie Shearer isn’t the kind of girl to just sit back and wait for things to happen.
One-half of BULL ANT Productions, she’s much like her company’s namesake in more ways than one. A bull ant is small but tough, with a bite that packs one mighty punch – and so is Katie, and it’s perhaps this reason that she has chosen to come out swinging in 2015 with Bitch Boxer, a one-woman show about Chloe; a female boxer with Olympic aspirations.
Chloe likes the simple things in life: Cherry Sambuca, hairbrush-in-the-mirror-karaoke and winding up her Dad. London 2012. Women step into the Olympic boxing ring for the first time. Can Chloe prove she’s worth the title? Bitch Boxer is an inspiring, breathtaking and critically acclaimed new play by Charlotte Josephine, and Katie Shearer is just the girl to fill these shoes – erm – gloves!
Performing Stephen Berkoff’s Decadence at The Adelaide Fringe in 2014 (winner, Best Theatre Production Sydney Fringe 2013 and nominated the same, Adelaide Fringe 2014), Katie discovered Bitch Boxer. She says, “I was struck with this heart-warming play’s freshness, energy, spirit, and soul. Playing a female boxer! What a challenge physically and mentally for a one-woman show. I was stuck with this performance for days after in my mind, with a sudden desire to take on this new work. An NSW premiere and to entertain people with this tour de force of a performance, what a chance not to grab with both gloved hands.”
Katie has never been known to shy away from a challenge of her own: Studying at The Adelaide Conservatorium, The Guilford School of Acting (UK), Ivana Chubbuck Studios (LA), making her way as a professional Baroque musician and with extensive national and international television and theatre credits to her name.
Bitch Boxer is directed by Sri Sacdpraseuth (All Saints, Wonderland) with assistant direction by Lucy Miller (Wolf Lullaby, Scenes From an Execution).
