This year will be bigger, better, and brighter than ever before.

The Tropical Mardi Gras festival is set to return to Cairns in September and October this year.

Previously running under the title of Cairns Tropical Pride, the festival is now in its tenth year celebrating the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer communities in Tropical North Queensland.

This year’s event will be even bigger, better and brighter, welcoming a new Festival Coordinator, Ricky Philbin, and a new Marketing Coordinator, Andrew Wheatland.

A founder of an LGBT+ martial arts club and former trainer for London Gay and Lesbian Switchboard, Mr. Philbin brings his international expertise to the festival, reflecting the growing international following of Tropical Mardi Gras.

This year’s festival, extending over ten days, will feature more unique events and be more inclusive of the entire community than ever before, according to Mr. Philbin.

“From dance parties to island trips, and fashion shows to rainforest excursions, our diverse program sets Tropical Mardi Gras apart from other gay pride festivals, and offers something for everyone in our rainbow family,” he said.

Mr. Wheatland will be focusing energy on growing Tropical Mardi Gras to attract more interstate and overseas visitors to the region.

“This year, we intend to build on our relationships with our sponsors and partners by offering exclusive holiday packages, including different levels of accommodation, reef and rainforest trips, and other tours and attractions,” Wheatland explained.

The festival program will be announced in the coming weeks. Tropical Mardi Gras celebrations will take place at various venues in Cairns from 30 September to 9 October.
