The Australian documentary GAYBY BABY, directed by Maya Newell and produced by Charlotte Mars, has been selected to screen at Hot Docs, one of the world’s most prestigious documentary festivals.

GAYBY BABY is one of the seven outstanding documentary features to be selected for the inaugural GOOD PITCH² AUSTRALIA last year.

GAYBY BABY is a feature documentary in which four kids take us into their homes and share what it’s like growing up with same-sex parents. The film takes an intimate, character-driven approach to issues at the heart of modern social politics: family, gender, sexuality, parenting and youth; skewering some of the most hotly debated contemporary issues with rarely heard voices that work to cut through the saturation of political rhetoric – the voices of the kids.

Director of GAYBY BABY Maya Newell comments: “Four years ago, Charlotte and I sat in a coffee shop and decided to make a film. This is our debut feature film and it’s an unexpected delight to be premiering at a prestigious film festival like Hot Docs. We hope this is only the beginning of a myriad of narratives that shine a light on diverse families on the big screen.”

GAYBY BABY’S inclusion in Hot Docs comes soon after the theatrical release of That Sugar Film, another GOOD PITCH² AUSTRALIA film. Also currently receiving attention is Frackman, which recently premiered at the Byron Bay International Film Festival and is also touring to cinemas around the country.

This year’s GOOD PITCH² AUSTRALIA will take place on 16 September 2015 at the Sydney Opera House and selected films will be announced in the coming weeks.
