The bakery made headlines after the owners refused to make a wedding cake citing religious objections.

An Oregon bakery that made headlines for refusing to make a wedding cake for a same-sex couple has announced on Facebook that it has closed down for good.

“We have closed Sweet Cakes. We appreciate everyone’s continued prayer and support,” the Facebook post stated.

Melissa and Aaron Klein, owners of Sweet Cakes by Melissa, were embroiled in controversy after refusing service to Laurel and Rachel Bowman-Cryer three years ago, citing their religious beliefs.

The bakery shop owners were ordered to pay the Bowman-Cryers $135,000 in damages.

According to Charisma News, a Christian media company, the bakery was shut down because the Kleins were bullied by “left-wing bigots” — otherwise known as the Homofascists — because they refused to “violate their conscience” and bake a cake for the Bowman-Cryer’s wedding.

“In 2007, Oregon passed one of the nation’s strongest LGBTQ non-discrimination laws recognizing that Oregonians believe in treating others as we ourselves would want to be treated,” Amy Herzfeld-Copple and Nancy Haque, Co-executive directors, Basic Rights Oregon told Gay Star News.

“The Sweet Cakes case really struck a chord with many Oregonians, because the business owners believed they had the right to deny services because of their religious beliefs. Oregonians know that our religious beliefs don’t entitle any of us to discriminate against others.”
