Support for marriage equality at an all time high

Galaxy Poll finds majority of Aussies are in favour of marriage equality.

A new poll commisssioned by Australian Marriage Equality shows close to two thirds of the nation are keen for marraige equality. The poll also showed that  52 per cent of Coalition voters want same-sex marriage reform and 44 per cent of voters would be more likely to support Tony Abbott if he allowed Coalition MPs a conscience vote on the issue.

The poll results will no doubt put further pressure on embattled PM Julia Gillard, who is being urged not to mount a Hgh Court challenge against Tasmania if Premier Laura Giddings should succeed with her push for marraige equality in Tasmania.

The opposition and a number of Labor MPs have called for Ms Gillard to take legal action, with Tasmanian Liberal senator Eric Abetz saying the laws were "socially destructive" and Labor MP John Murphy saying it would set a dangerous precedent for states to interfere with federal law.

The ACT government has also inidcated that it may also pass its own same sex marriage bill.

The Galaxy Poll which surveyed 865 people around the country showed support for marraige equality at 64 percent - the highest on record since polling on the topic began.

Australian Marriage Equality convenor Alex Greenwich commented that "the message to the federal parliament is clear -  if you ignore the aspirations of the majority of Australians and fail to support this reform it will occur anyway, state by state and territory by territory."
