NSW Parliament refuses to commemorate victims of transphobic violenceNSW Parliament has failed to pass a motion commemorating transgender victims of violence today on Transgender Day of Remembrance.

The motion was blocked by the Christian Democrats.

Greens NSW spokesperson for Sexuality and Gender Identity, Dr Mehreen Faruqi MLC, has criticised the NSW Parliament for failing to pass a motion.

Dr Faruqi stated:

“This morning, the Christian Democrats blocked a notice of motion acknowledging today as the annual Transgender Day of Remembrance.

“It is very disappointing that the Parliament will not pass a motion commemorating victims of homicide just because they are transgender.

“The Greens motion highlighted the discrimination, harassment and social exclusion many transgender people face in our society”

“This parliament needs to recognise that it is simply unacceptable that any Australian should be subject to violence, bullying, abuse and intimidation as a result of their identity.

“As parliamentarians, we should be moving to remove discrimination from the law and prejudice from our society, not further entrenching it by refusing to even mark this important day.

World Transgender Day of Remembrance occurs annually on 20 November in memory of those who have been killed as a result of hatred or fear of transgender and gender non-conforming people, and acts to bring attention to the continued violence and discrimination endured by the transgender community”, she concluded.
