Australian Premiere Of Requiem Mass: LGBT/Working Title At Day For Night: 24HRS
Day For Night: 24HRS explores and celebrates diverse gender expressions and experiences of gender, sexuality, and the body.
Performance Space and Carriageworks are thrilled to announce the return of the much-anticipated Day For Night project for 2016. Performance Space Artistic Director Jeff Khan certainly upped the ante when curating Day for Night: 24HRS, presenting the event as 2 consecutive 12-hour days of parties, lectures, performances, installations and music on Saturday 20 and Sunday 21 February 2016, drawing together leading queer Australian and international artists.
“Day for Night: 24HRS is a multi-faceted, multidisciplinary invocation of queer space and time, exploring and celebrating diverse expressions and experiences of gender, sexuality and the body.” Mr. Khan said.
“For the first time, Day for Night will include leading international queer artists with the participation of award-winning American musician Holcombe Waller who will present the Australian premiere of his stunning new choral work, Requim Mass: LGBT/ Working Title” he said.
Requim Mass: LGBT/Working Title is a ceremonial choral work that deeply explores contemporary faith and advocacy through art and collective catharsis. Performed as part of Day for Night: 24HRS with an all-abilities community choir drawn from all walks of life towards the project’s mission, Requim Mass is an emotional and personal work invoking remembrance and peace for the dead who have suffered persecution for their sexual orientation or gender expression. Requiem Mass was additionally informed by research into pivotal gay history in the United States from the 1980s through present day and by community engagement that has included working with experts in liturgical music, queer theory, faith-based equality initiatives as well as over 100 participants in a series of choral workshops with Waller throughout 2014 and 2015 in Portland, Oregon.

Legendary producers, DJs and musicians Stereogamous (Jonny Seymour & Paul Mac) return to Day for Night, scoring the soundtrack for each artist’s work and DJing the multiple Day for Night party moments across the project’s 24 hours.
